Inspired by Epictetus

 

The Northern Red values are inspired by the teachings of Epictetus, a Stoic philosopher who lived from approximately 50 to 135 AD. Born into slavery in the Roman Empire, Epictetus gained his freedom and became one of history's most influential teachers of character, discipline, and personal responsibility. Unlike many philosophers who focused on abstract theories, Epictetus taught that the quality of a person's life is determined not by external circumstances, but by how they choose to think, act, and respond to those circumstances.

 

At the heart of his philosophy was a simple but powerful idea: some things are within our control, and some are not. Wisdom comes from focusing our energy on what we can control, our choices, actions, attitudes, and character, while accepting what we cannot. The Northern Red values reflect this philosophy by emphasizing self-mastery, responsibility, courage, integrity, and service as the path to personal excellence and meaningful leadership.
